    RSC East Midlands e-fair 2009

    Brief Details:The main event in the RSC calendar is the e-fair, which will take place at The Walkers Stadium in Leicester for the second year running on Tuesday 23rd June. There will be the usual wealth of content in relation to e-learning and the event is free to all supported learning providers.
    Information:Various resources from the RSC e-fair are now available on our Moodle site. We will be continuing to add information over the coming weeks, so if what you want isn't there yet, it should be shortly.

    Chris Batt OBE will be delivering the keynote presentation "Learning was never what it used to be: what does that tell us about the future?". Chris was formerly the Chief Executive of the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council and was awarded the Sunday Times Internet Guru of the Year in 2003.

    The event will feature:


    All delegates will receive a Free AccessApps USB stick. This is a collection of portable and completely free software applications. There is also ample space for your own files to be saved on it too.

    Workshops

    The workshop sessions will last for 45 minutes. Delegates are requested to choose up to a maximum of 2 workshops only. This is to allow you to experience the other areas of the e-fair, for which you do not need to book.

    Session 1: 11:00-11:45

    Mini Presentations

    During the day there will be a series of short, sharp presentations on projects that have examples of effective practice and items of interest. It is also a chance for some of our exhibitors to showcase their products and services.

    The mini presentation slots will be 20 minutes long and take place in the Great Hall. No booking is required for these – just make your way to the front of the seating area where the keynote presentations took place.

    Try-It-For-Yourself area

    This is a hands-on area that throughout the day in the Great Hall will allow you to try out new technologies, software applications and bits of kit. No booking is required for this area.

    • 12:45 - Creating Prompts for Mobiles (Portland College)

    • 13:30 - Mobile Classroom (CTEM Ltd)

    • 14:15 - Hands-on with the NLN Materials (NLN Materials Service support team, Xtensis Ltd.)


    Accessibility and Inclusion Hub - in association with JISC TechDis

    This area of the e-fair supports accessibility and inclusion in the widest sense, producing pragmatic advice and guidance on a range of topics from reasonable adjustment to content creation, from inclusion policy to library practice.

    The access and inclusion hub will highlight some of the many areas the JISC TechDis service and RSC East Midlands are currently involved with but those staffing the hub will be more than happy to answer questions on any related topic.

    The highlighted areas will be:
    • Content creation – come and try the free Xerte content creation tool

    • Inclusive mobile learning – try some of the techniques recommended in the JISC TechDis UpwardlyMobile DVD

    • AccessApps – take a closer look at what’s available in these free portable software tools

    • Intellikeys - come and make your own keyboard overlay

    • USB Camcorders - the opportunity to record visually can benefit learners with dyslexia, cognitive and hearing impairments


    Exhibition area

    There will be a mixture of JISC services, educational organisations and commercial companies in our general exhibition area showcasing their latest offerings and be on hand to give you advice and information on a wide range of e-learning topics.

    The exhibition will run in the Great Hall throughout the day, except during the keynote, allowing you plenty of time to visit all the stands of interest to you.

    1a) The e-books for FE project

    Come to this session to find out more about the e-books for FE project, which will provide 3,000 e-books relevant to the FE curriculum.

    They will be available via the Ebrary e-books platform free of charge under unlimited concurrent access to every FE college in the UK for 5 years from May 2009.

    Access to the e-books will be made available under the JISC model licence so that staff and students can use the e-books to their full potential in teaching and learning.

    1b) Collaborative working gets results

    Collaborative working between providers is something that’s often promoted but can it work effectively?

    Charnwood know it can – they are currently leading a consortium of three providers who successfully bid for LIG 4 funding.

    In this session Jeremy will talk about the Virtual Academy and share experience gained in developing a partnership approach to using technology effectively in the Work Based sector.

    1c) MoLeNET - Mobile devices to support Key Skills

    Andrew and Tony will share their experiences of implementing mobile devices into a range of curriculum where Key Skills is embedded.

    The devices used include state of the art smart phones, iPods, Nintendo DS, PSPs, ultra mobile PCs (UMPCs) and student voting systems.

    The project ran over 9 months and included 3 colleges, nearly 500 devices and needed the installation of two wireless networks.

    Also running this session is Tony Jewson (Northampton College).

    1d) Strategic priorities and RSC support

    This session invites you to join the RSC East Midlands Steering Group in exploring strategic priorities for the coming year.

    Discussion will start from what the current demand for RSC services shows and the views of Steering Group members on sector priorities for colleges, ACL and WBL.

    The outcome will enable RSC East Midlands to support regional learning providers more effectively.

    2a) Learning the lessons from the ASUS project

    Feedback on the usefulness of the ASUS eeePC in Adult & Community Learning.
    Participants will:

    - Be given the opportunity to explore the ASUS eeePC

    - Develop an awareness of its potential use in ACL settings and its drawbacks

    - Get feedback about how ASUS eeePCs have been used by tutors across Nottinghamshire

    This workshop will also feature Lyn McDermott (Leicestershire Adult Learning Service).

    2b) The TEA Project: Online assessment using Moodle with work based learners

    This session will discuss the progress and outcomes of the JISC funded TEA Project (Tri-party E-Assessment).

    The project examined the use of Moodle online assessments with groups of engineering work based learners working for various employers including Rolls-Royce.

    The project also looked at the use of the Moodle platform to support specific employer requirements in terms of visibility of college activities and reporting requirements.

    2c) Harnessing technology: the leadership challenge

    In order to effectively harness technology and transform learning provision an organisation needs to adopt a whole organisational approach and have the commitment of the senior management team.

    In the Web2.0 era it also needs to trust and empower learners, and engage them in a new learning partnership.

    This seminar will identify key leadership challenges and identify strategies to enable the organisation to harness technology more effectively and to become more e-mature.

    2d) Excellence Gateway - A guided tour of the new online Core Curriculum

    The Excellence Gateway is now hosting the Skills for Life Core Curriculum in literacy, numeracy and ESOL and the pre-entry curriculum framework in a new online version.

    This powerful online tool is an updated version of the original paper-based core curriculum, with additional features, and is vital for all trainers and teachers who support adult learners.

    As well as providing new content, the online version offers:
    - improved accessibility;
    - examples of embedded learning in action;
    - links to other supporting materials.

    This seminar will explore how the new online Core Curriculum is set to support all practitioners in the post-16 education and training sector.

    3a) Network in a suitcase - Setting up a mobile class of eeePCs

    With the arrival on the market of small, affordable, portable netbooks or eeePCs, it opens up opportunities in providing a very portable IT solution to get Information Learning Technology (ILT) delivered in any location.

    In this workshop you will learn:

    - What equipment is needed

    - How to connect the equipment together

    - Your options to encourage collaborative working in the class

    3b) Work Based Learning Update – who’s doing what with e-learning

    Your chance to catch up with what’s happening in the sector and to find out about some of the innovative practical applications of technology being used in Work Based Learning across the region.

    An opportunity to network with colleagues, share good practice and discuss different approaches.

    3c) e-Portfolios: one college’s experience

    As part of a JISC funded project, Loughborough College has been working with e-portfolios to how they can develop one to use with their learners.

    In this session they hope to give you an honest view of their experiences so far.

    This will include:

    - What is an e-portfolio? (not always a simple question)

    - What options are there available? (open source/commercial)

    - Their experience of working with open source systems (what they did and why)

    - What worked well (and what didn’t) with their students

    This workshop will also feature Samuel Persse and John Mendes (Loughborough College).

    3d) Jorum: why reinvent the wheel?

    Come to this session to find out about Jorum, a free, national, online repository service for learning and teaching materials.

    Content is produced and submitted by Jorum’s community of tutors, learning technologists and librarians in UK FE and HE institutions.

    Jorum contains resources for teaching across all subject areas, encouraging the sharing, reuse and repurposing of these materials; JorumOpen will extend this community worldwide.
